Dick Thornburgh Forum for Law and Public Policy
The Dick Thornburgh Forum for Law and Public Policy, www.thornburghforum.pitt.edu, was formed in 2007 and has as its mission to foster public education and civic action on important public policy issues, building on Thornburgh’s legacy. In March, 2012, it sponsored a conference entitled: ”From Its Birthplace: A Symposium on the Future of Nuclear Power.” All details of this and other Forum news can be found on the Forum website.
American Experience Lectures
Beginning in 2010, the Dick Thornburgh Forum and the University of Pittsburgh Honors College co-sponsor the esteemed American Experience Lectures. Lecturers have included Judy Woodruff of the PBS “News Hour”; noted correspondent Alfredo Corchado, Mexico Bureau Chief, Dallas Morning News; and Robert Reischauer, Economist and President of the Urban Institute.
Annual Lecture Series in Disability Law & Policy
The annual Thornburgh Family Lecture Series in Disability Law & Policy recently has featured Andrew J. Imparato, then the President of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), U.S. Senator Tom Harkin, I. King Jordan, Ruth Colker, and Judith E. Heumann.
Edna Silberman Award to Thornburghs
In November, 2011, Governor and Mrs. Dick Thornburgh received the Edna Silberman Humanitarian Award for their dedicated service and advocacy in creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This annual award by Keystone Human Services recognized the Thornburghs for going above and beyond to serve vulnerable populations and “Advance the Human Spirit.”
Undergraduate Student Summer Fellowships
The Dick Thornburgh Forum and the University Honors College founded the Dick Thornburgh Summer Fellowships in 2011 to support undergraduate research into issues of governance addressed in Governor Dick Thornburgh’s long and eminent public service career. Research must make substantial use of the Thornburgh archive. Application information can be found on the Forum website.
Faculty Grants
Beginning in 2010 the Thornburgh Forum makes available faculty grants for undergraduate or graduate faculty members. The purpose of the grants is to expand relevant utilization of the extensive resources of the Thornburgh archive. See Forum website for application information.
